The chronicle of family Huainigg goes way back to the 12th century and has always been connected with areas of agriculture, forestry, fisheries, large estates and industry (Thaddeus von Lanner).
Over the centuries, family Huaninigg was always devoted to the preservation, further development and profitable change of the family-owned assets. These aspirations were executed according to the opportunities of the respective time periods and with consideration of the roots, values and the historical obligations of the family to itself, to the community and to society. This path has been trod single-mindedly and conscientiously by every generation and changes have taken place against the backdrop of a changing framework in politics, currency, geography, topography, climate, economics, and society, during times of peace, but also times of war.
Thaddeus von Lanner had a role as a great visionary in the history of family Huaninigg. After completing his training as a merchant in 1812, Thaddeus von Lanner took over his father’s estate. This estate was the basis for his entrepreneurial career at the beginning of the industrial revolution. His advancement as an industrialist began in 1819 with the establishment of the brewery in Krumpendorf. As his establishment expanded to a miniature corporation, he remained largely in the agriculture sector. The brewing industry was expanded to include a distillery and livestock breeding as well as silkworm breeding. In 1890 Thaddeus von Lanner’s businesses were visited by the imperial couple.
Besides the manor house in Krumpendorf, which was his residence, he also bought castle Drasing in 1839. He was one of the six founding directors of bank Carinthia Sparkasse and was a representative in the Carinthian state parliament. Thaddeus von Lanner died in Krumpendorf in 1861.
In recent history Josef Huainigg sen. played a large role in changing the course of the company from agricultural orientation to development of tourism business and real estate rentals from the time of the second world war till the 90’s. His son, Mag. Dr. Josef Huainigg, has followed this business path of the family and further expanded in the direction of renting and leasing real estate at a wide variety of levels and adapted the needs to modern times and is still in full swing in this process, till his sons will one day continue on this innovative path in face of the challenges of their time.
Over the centuries and up to modern times, the rights for the fishing regions on Lake Wörthersee have been connected to and owned by family Huainigg. Historical literature tells that family Huainigg owned the fishing rights as far back as the 12th century and had to turn in tithe in the form of fish to the bishop and the church (the leaders of the cathedral in Maria Saal).
Today not only is the economic success of the fishing company a focal point, but also creating a sustainable and balanced fish population in the whole lake region.
Since the end of the 80’s family Huainigg, in particular Mr. Josef Huainigg sen., has been strongly involved in projects for hatching indigenous fish (lake whitefish, pike, etc.) for the purpose of preserving the fish population in Lake Wörthersee. Every year between approx. 6 and 10 million fish fry are indigenously hatched for the 1600 hectare surface area of Lake Wörthersee (divided into about 25 authorized fisheries). In the framework of this project fish spawn is gathered from Lake Wörthersee in December and fertilized and then brought to indigenous fish hatcheries on Lake Millstättersee, where they are hatched and reared to juvenile fish. In the spring, millions of juvenile fish are put into Lake Wörthersee. Only sustainable and consistent work in this area will ensure an ecologically balanced fish population in Lake Wörthersee in the future.
Against the background of the chronicle and history of family Huainigg, buildings with historical value, which are owned by the family today, are continuously being renovated with the highest precision and sensitivity and with consideration of the historical substance in order for them to be maintained and preserved for the present time and the future. The latest example of such a conservation project is the building Schurianhof in Leinsdorf in Krumpendorf. The manor house Krumpendorf and castle Drasing are no longer owned by the family.
Also when constructing new buildings an attempt is made on one hand to capture the zeitgeist and on the other hand to fulfill historical obligations.
Family Huainigg’s attachment to the land of the region where they work, has led them since the 1980s to purchase artworks from contemporary, local artists. The family views this as a contribution to the advancement and support of important artistic activities and significant art performance in the region, which have been achieved and will continue to be achieved in the future.
